There are many conditions and diseases that can affect gait and balance. Among the most common are orthopedic injuries (lower extremity fractures, strains, sprains, hip and knee replacements, back dysfunction), multiple sclerosis, brain injuries, stroke, and cerebral palsy. Using a variety of tools, Physical Therapy has proven to be successful in the treatment of gait and balance disturbances.
The Physical Therapist evaluates strength, range of motion ,posture, endurance, pain levels, and areas of muscle guarding to identify the factors that are affecting gait and balance. Once the evaluation is complete, the therapist formulates an individualized treatment program for the patient.
